Why a Detox May Be Just the Thing Your Body Needs.

One of my favorite parts of my work is getting to teach people new ways of improving their life through clean eating.

So several times a year I host an 10-day online detox program. It’s a great way to reach people from all over and help them understand that counting calories, starving yourself, or eliminating some foods for a certain number of days is not effective. My detox is aimed to change how you eat…by eating real food.

Here are 10 reasons why a detox may be for you:

  1. Optimize the function of your colon, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, lymphatic system, and skin. When your body is clean and healthy, all of your vital organs can do their job properly. A detox will allow toxins to leave your body, making it easier for your colon, liver, kidneys, etc. to work as they should.
  2. Restore gut health: Improve elimination, cleanse the colon, eliminate pathogens, improve digestion. The longer toxins sit in your body, the more likely they are to get absorbed and the greater your risk for developing disease. So a detox will help your digestive system eliminate toxins, essentially cleaning out your system.
  3. Reduce chronic symptoms and improve autoimmunity, respiratory health, skin conditions, and digestion. Since we know that 70% of our immune system is in our gut, we know that as soon as we start taking care of it, our overall health will improve.
  4. Control of your blood sugar and reduce sugar cravings, fatigue, and irritability. Ever wonder why you’re exhausted at 3pm? It may have something to do with your sleeping habits, but more often than not, it has to do with what you’re eating. Whatever you do, don’t grab something sugary to get you through the rest of the day!
  5. Reduce joint pain and reduce cellular inflammation. Many people don’t ever consider food as a reason for body pain. The fact is that there are certain foods that can trigger inflammation, leaving your joints achy. These include fried food, processed food, sugars, refined carbohydrates, dairy and salt.
  6. Improve your mood, focus and mental clarity.  Remember: when you eat crap, you feel like crap. Sometimes it’s honestly that simple.
  7. Ignite your passion for life.  Have you ever had a casual date night where you ate a cheeseburger and fries? Did you go home and enjoy some intimate time with your significant other? Or did you go home and put on your comfy pants?
  8. Eliminate addictions and cravings. Both sugar and caffeine are highly addictive. Why? Because when we have either (and other bad things for our health), our brain releases dopamine and it makes us feel good. But because these things are bad for us, they actually hijack our brain to make us crave and eat more.
  9. Have long lasting energy and vitality.  Again, it all comes back to eating a heavy, carb loaded meal and feeling sluggish. Eating the opposite will have the opposite effect. Trust me.
  10. Effectively manage your weight and eliminate toxic fat. You probably don’t need a health coach to tell you that if you eliminate bad food, eat healthy food and improve your body’s digestive system, that you’ll lose weight.
