A Doctor that Prescribes Nutrition Over Medication  

During my 20 years of formal education, I attended the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (the world’s largest nutrition school) to become a holistic health practitioner. It was an amazing experience because I had the opportunity to learn from the best doctors and scientists in the health and nutrition field around the world.

One of my favorite doctors that taught at IIN was Dr. Joseph Mercola.

After being a general practitioner for a few years, Dr. Mercola realized that the prescription drugs he was prescribing to his patients were not effective. He later found that by simply changing their diets and adding exercise, some of his patients saw dramatic improvement in their conditions. Now Dr. Mercola has written 9 books, has been published in many medical journals, and has appeared on numerous national news outlets.

So what have I learned from Dr. Mercola? It’s probably easier to list the things I have not learned from him, such as changing a flat tire and handling my pre-teen’s attitude – two things he has not covered yet 😉

Here are the top three things I have learned from my years of following Dr. Mercola:

Supplements

There is a myth that has forever been circulated that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements. Yet, if you look at their website it states: 

FDA regulates both finished dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients. FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering “conventional” foods and drug products. 

This myth often accompanies another one that says supplements are not safe. Sure, if you Google it you’ll see headlines like this one from the New York Times, Dietary Supplements Lead to 20,000 E.R. Visits Yearly, Study Finds. But if you actually read the article and not just the headline, you’d learn that “In comparison, prescription drugs are responsible for 30 times as many trips to the emergency room each year.”

And in the 20,000 E.R. visits, only 10% resulted in a hospital stay. 

Do counterfeit supplements exist? Of course they do. The issue with counterfeit supplements is that they are typically “spiked” with a pharmaceutical or synthetic drug. It’s not the actual vitamins doing the harm.

As with any counterfeit problem, it’s more of an enforcement issue and not entirely about the safety of ALL vitamin supplements. 

Dr. Mercola does recommend (and I agree) that people steer clear of diet or fat burning supplements, because those are not vitamins.

GMOs

Sometimes I cannot believe that it’s 2016 and we’re still debating the safety of GMOs. GMOs are actually banned in countries where they’ve only just gotten WiFi. But those countries are far more advanced than us on the science of genetically modifying food we eat. < insert eye roll >

It’s no secret that GMO seeds contain their own insecticide (BT-toxin) and they are created to resist pesticides (also known as “Roundup Ready”). And it’s also well known that the active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, which is a carcinogen

As far as BT-toxin, it was created to attack the cells of an insect’s gut, essentially causing the insect’s stomach to explode. But Monsanto claims it’s perfectly safe for humans because our digestive system will destroy it. Do you feel safe with that explanation? Neither do some doctors:

Doctors at Quebec’s Sherbrooke University Hospital were shocked to find the toxin circulating in the blood of 93 percent of the pregnant women, 80 percent of their babies’ umbilical blood, and 67 percent of the non-pregnant women they tested (source).

So how do GMOs affect our health? For one, they can initiate an inflammatory response in our bodies, especially our gut. Chronic inflammation leads to diseases such as heart disease, birth defects, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and cancer. Remember that our gut makes up 70% of our immune system.

Nutrition and Cancer

Like most adults today, cancer is something that has hit way too close to home for me. But with my husband’s cancer diagnosis came a new realization that our diets affect our health more than previously thought. Dr. Mercola taught me that a diet high in healthy fats and low in non-fiber carbohydrates can not only help reverse a cancer diagnosis, but possibly prevent one from occurring. 

Dr. Otto Warburg studied this in the early 1900s and found that cancer cells have different energy than healthy cells. He concluded that sugar feeds cancer cells and healthy fats starve them.

This is why nutritional ketosis (Keto diet) is effective against cancer, because it eliminates carbs (which turn into sugar when digested) and replaces them with healthy fat. 

The Keto diet also drives down inflammation in your body and once this happens, your body can begin to heal itself. 

So what should you eat? Organic meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, seeds, nuts, beans and veggies.
