Foods That Many Consider Healthy, But I’ll Never Eat
So-called “health foods” are everywhere. It’s frustrating to search for healthy recipes on websites, such as Pinterest, and find ingredients that as a health coach, I would never consider healthy.
So what kind of things do I consider so-called “health foods”? I’ll start with the following simple foods:
Wheat
Bagels, rice cakes, pretzels, wheat bread, are all high glycemic, starchy carbs that contain zero nutrition. People often mistake wheat bread for being healthy because it’s ‘whole grain’. But that’s all marketing; wheat bread is actually as high on the glycemic index as a candy bar.
Sushi
Ahhh sushi. I used to love it…until I learned about parasites. Did you know that many doctors that specialize in digestion would not go near sushi?
Why? Well it all starts with the way the raw fish is handled. The FDA requires that all fish be frozen at a minimum of -4°F for seven days or -31°F for fifteen hours. Doing so kills the parasites inside of the fish, and keeps it fresh. The problem becomes when companies or restaurants don’t comply, but also some people do have a sensitivity to even dead parasites in the fish.
And don’t get me started on soy sauce.
Protein Bars
You may think you’re grabbing a healthy snack, but most protein bars are high in protein AND carbs. And many have sugar alcohols that can cause intestinal gas, leading to irritable bowel symptoms such as intestinal pain, constipation or diarrhea. And have you ever stopped to look at the ingredients of your favorite protein bar? Many are made with less than optimal ingredients, like partially hydrogenated oils, artificial ingredients, and carrageenan.
Corn
Any kind of corn product that isn’t organic is on my ‘No-No List’. That’s because 85% of corn is genetically modified. This includes corn tortillas, corn flakes, corn bread, etc. Also, many people still think corn is a vegetable…it’s NOT! Corn is a grain. So if you are trying to lose weight, it’s important to know that corn is used to fatten up cows.
Corn also acts like sugar in your blood stream and is hard to digest.
