If you’re the type of person who will grab a cup of coffee or a candy bar around 3pm for that little boost of energy, then listen up.

The fact is that there are other – healthier – options out there that not only boost your energy, but boost your mood. And if you find yourself dragging at some point every day, then you also need to consider that you may be eating foods that zap your energy.

I’m going to share which foods you should eat for energy and which you should avoid.

Foods that Boost Energy:

  1. Apples – not only do they keep the doctor away, but they keep a nap away as well. Apples are chock full of vitamins and minerals, including fiber. And because they are a healthy food that takes longer to digest, the energy you gain from them will last long.
  2. Bananas – minions love them and those little guys are full of energy! Bananas are also high in fiber and they contains natural sugar – glucose, fructose and sucrose. The first two give you immediate energy, and then sucrose acts more slowly and keeps your blood sugar level stable.
  3. Spinach – as we learned from Popeye, he’s “strong to the finish, ’cause I eats me Spinach”. Spinach is a great source of iron and magnesium, both important for energy. The great thing about spinach is you can add some to a smoothie, sandwich or salad.
  4. Cucumbers – since cucumbers contain lots of water and water gives you energy, this makes sense. Water and cucumbers help keep you hydrated when you’re active. And cucumbers contain vitamin B, which give you a longer-lasting boost of energy.
  5. Almonds – almonds are awesome for so many reasons; they contain protein, manganese, copper and riboflavin. All which aid in oxygen-based energy production. Almonds are also great for curbing your appetite and maintaining mental focus.

Foods that Deplete Energy:

  1. Soda – oh boy, there are just so many bad things about drinking soda. Soda contains so much sugar (or artificial sweetener if you’re drinking diet), that it causes your sugar levels to increase, insulin to be released, which then lowers your blood sugar levels quickly.
  2. Pasta – starchy foods can also cause a quick drop in blood sugar levels, leaving you exhausted.
  3. Red Meat – since red meat takes longer for your body to digest, you body uses more energy to break the meat down.
  4. Turkey – turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid that relaxes the body.
  5. Candy – when you first eat candy, your blood sugar level goes way up, but then drops rapidly. This leaves you feeling sluggish.
