Sleep, along with diet and nutrition are the three main factors affecting our health.

We all know we need to sleep, but often sleep falls to the bottom of the priority list.  Getting lots of shut eye is looked upon as a weakness in our fast paced society.  Our children watch and learn from our busy schedules.

Their days are filled with activities so that they can become well rounded and be exposed to different opportunities.  Though we have the best intentions for them, I am here to tell you that we need to put their sleep ahead of everything else.

WHY? I hear you ask.  Here are the top 5 reasons on how sleep benefits your children:

  1. Sleep promotes maximum physical growth.  Children outgrow their clothes, sometimes it feels overnight.  That’s because they do!  Muscle and bone development occur at night when the brain is in the restorative sleep stage (deep sleep). You need sufficient number of hours of sleep in order to cycle through deep sleep multiple times in the night.
  2. Sleep improves brain development.  All the information and knowledge that they have gained during the day, gets processed and compartmentalized in their brain so that they can retrieve it and apply it when needed. Experts call it cognitive thinking which is essential for children to excel in school.  It also boosts their memory power.
  3. Sleep improves attention.  When children are well rested they are able to pay attention and focus on a single task.  When I hear parents say that their child can’t focus on something for more than a minute and they are always zooming from one thing to another, it’s usually a sign of over-tiredness.  Adults get sleepy when tired, but children become hyperactive.
  4. Sleep helps repair the body and strengthens the immune system – there is a reason why all we want to do is sleep when we get sick.  It’s our body’s way of healing itself.  When we get enough sleep, all our internal systems have time to go to work.  They check repair our muscles and restore our bodies, while we are in the deepest stages of sleep.
  5. Sleep makes children happier – this is a no-brainer! When your children get a good night’s sleep they are angels (for the better part of the day).  Once they start to get tired their demeanor starts to decline quickly.  This is why bedtimes are usually battle zones in households as we have missed the window of opportunity to put them to bed before they get too tired.

Turn off those electronics an hour or two before bedtime and spend time winding down. If you have to choose between a late evening activity or bedtime, choose bedtime and figure out a different time for the activity.

Children up to the age of 10 need 11-12 hours (you read that right!) of continuous, uninterrupted sleep to experience all the benefits.  Practice the early bedtime and 11-12 hours of sleep for at least 2 weeks in order to regulate their body clock to the new changes.

So, prioritize your family’s sleep today (that includes you) and get to bed early!
