Can Something as Simple as Oxygen Help Treat Cancer?
We all know that oxygen is essential for all living things to survive.
But what you may not know is that oxygen is required for normal cellular physiology.
Because cancer cells are anaerobic, they thrive in an oxygen-deprived environment. Therefore high amounts of oxygen are toxic to cancer cells and will slow their growth (remember that sugar feeds cancer cells).

Dr. Otto Warburg
This idea dates all the way back to the 1930’s when Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for discovering that low oxygen was a characteristic of cancer cells. He stated in an article titled The Prime Cause & Prevention of Cancer, “The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen (oxidation of sugar) in normal body cells by fermentation of sugar.”
Dr. Warburg did not believe that cancer was caused by the lack of oxygen, but that cancer itself causes the lack of oxygen. Simply put, cancer cells have low oxygen because they quit taking in oxygen for respiration and instead use sugar fermentation.
Since Dr. Warburg, researchers have found that high amounts of oxygen in cancer cells can stop cancer growth.
Killing Cancer Cells with Oxygen Therapy
You may say to yourself, well there is plenty of oxygen in the air. But in fact, our atmosphere only contains 21% oxygen.
There are also several reasons cells cannot get enough oxygen they need:
- The cells contain too many toxins
- Cell walls will not allow nutrients into the cells
- You’re not getting nutrients needed for respiration
- Poor circulation
- Low levels of oxygen in the air we breathe
Oxygen as a cancer therapy provides 100% oxygen in a pressurized atmosphere. This allows 20 times more oxygen absorbed into the bloodstream.
Northeastern University immunologists found that tumors shrank with supplemental oxygenation. According to Michail Sitkovsky of Northeastern University, “breathing supplemental oxygen opens up the gates of the tumor fortress and wakes up ‘sleepy’ anti-tumor cells, enabling these soldiers to enter the fortress and destroy it”.
If chemotherapy and radiation are part of your cancer treatment, another study discovered that oxygen therapy combined with radiation and chemotherapy greatly enhanced the effectiveness of the conventional treatment. Oxygen therapy also reduced the side effects from chemo or radiation.
Interested? There are clinics that perform Ozone Therapy, which involves removing part of the blood from the body, saturating this blood with oxygen, and then putting this oxygen-rich blood back into the body. Check out Cancer Tutor for more information on oxygen therapy and the clinics.
