Is Providing Healthy Food for Employees Good for Productivity?

Today’s post is a guest blog from the fine people over at Zero Cater. They provide custom catering from local chefs and restaurants to companies and their employees. The idea is that when workers eat healthy, clean food, it will create a high-performing office culture.

When you think about all the influences on your performance at work, you probably list things like co-workers and projects, administrative support and budget.

Deadlines and skill sets, as well as technology, might pop onto the list, too.

But do you think about what you eat having an influence on how you do at your job?

Probably not, but the two are intimately related. Think about it: If you’re training for an athletic event, you watch what you eat because what you eat directly impacts how well you do physically. The same is true for work: Clean eating can make you a more productive, timely, creative individual at the office.

According to Harvard Medical School’s blog, “eating high-quality foods that contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress — the “waste” (free radicals) produced when the body uses oxygen, which can damage cells.”

And clean eating doesn’t mean restricting yourself to a few carrots for lunchtime; the idea is actually more about avoiding processed foods—and all the junk that comes with them—instead.

Foods to avoid:

  • Processed food and other trans fatty acids
  • Saturated fats
  • Sugar and high fructose corn syrup
  • Simple carbohydrates (baked goods, cereal, etc.)
