I’ve always been the sort of person who takes into consideration what something is going to “cost me”. For example, if I want to buy a pair of ridiculously expensive shoes, I think about how many hours I’ll have to work to pay for them. Then I usually get sad and walk out of the store empty-handed.
Same goes with food. While I love to indulge every now and then, I do think about how much I’ll have to exercise to work off that Frappuccino.
So when I saw the chart that PopSugar posted on exercise based on burning off fun-size candy bars, I knew I had to share. Because, like most things, when you see it in print, it makes it more real…and makes you get on that treadmill.
Amount of exercise to burn off these bite-size candy bars:
Kit Kat (70 calories) | 10 minutes of rowing (moderate effort) |
Regular M&M’s (67 calories) | 9 minutes of jumping jacks |
Heath Bar (77 calories) | 12 minutes of aerobics |
100 Grand (95 calories) | 17 minutes of leisurely biking (10-12 mph) |
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (110 calories) | 7 minutes of jogging (10 min. mile pace) |
Now the above information is based on a woman who weighs 130 pounds. You need to keep in mind that people who weigh more will burn more calories because their bodies are heavier.
As many of us get older, it becomes obvious that in order to maintain a healthy weight, we need to keep the amount of calories we take in and amount we burn off pretty equal – calories in, calories out. This is not always an easy task because it can depend on what type of exercise you choose and also your current weight.
The FitWatch website has a handy Time to Burn Calculator where you enter in the calories you ate, your activity and your weight and it lets you know how long you’ll have to do that activity to burn off those calories. There’s also a free iPhone app that will calculate the calories you burned from their list of over 200 exercises, called the Exercise Calorie Calculator.
