Are the Mercury Fillings in Your Mouth Making You Sick?
Did you know that in the U.S. dental offices are the 2nd largest user of mercury?
That’s because the amalgam, or silver fillings, your dentist most likely used to fill your cavities contains 43-54% mercury. I don’t know about you, but to me that’s a little disconcerting.
What is Mercury?
Here are a few quick facts about mercury:
- It’s a neurotoxin, which is an agent that affects the central nervous system. This can lead to psychological, neurological and immunological problems.
- In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report titled “Future Use of Materials for Dental Restoration”, where they called for the phasing out of using amalgam fillings.
- Dental fillings containing mercury are fully banned in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. In Canada, Austria and Germany, they are banned for children, pregnant women and people with kidney problems.
- Dr. Mercola spoke about mercury in fillings and said, “If you were to take the amount of mercury in a typical thermometer and put it in a small lake, that lake would be closed down due to environmental hazards.”

Why is Mercury Bad for You?
It’s crazy, we have to carefully recycle incandescent light bulbs because of the mercury they contain, but dentists are allowed to put mercury just inches from our brain. Mercury is also a known carcinogen (a cancer causing agent) which diminishes your immune system. And besides keeping you from catching your friend’s cold, your immune system is your primary defense against cancer.
Mercury in your system can also increase the amount of free radicals in your body, which can damage your cell membranes – another cause of cancer.
Removing Mercury Fillings
So what can you do if you have mercury fillings in your mouth? If you’re interested in having them removed, it’s recommended that you have it done by a biological dentist because they will remove the fillings in a safe way that lessons any additional mercury exposure.
Biological dentists, also known as holistic dentists, focus on your oral health as well as your overall health. They firmly believe that your teeth can have a major influence on how your body handles illness. There are plenty of resources to help you find a biological dentist, including the Holistic Dental Association. And Dr. Mercola has a list of questions to ask when searching for a biological dentist.
