Health Benefits of Vetiver

I love introducing people to oils they may not have heard of. And vetiver essential oil is one of my favorites.

The vetiver plant, Vetiveria zizanioides, is a member of the grass family. Unlike other grasses, the root system of vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. dōTERRA obtains vetiver essential oil from the roots of the plant (source).

The main chemical constituents of vetiver oil are carvone, isovalencenol, khusimol. These chemicals have grounding properties and are what make it a grounding oil.  Carvone is a monoterpene that is a member of the ketones functional group. Carvone contains energizing properties that add to the beneficial chemical properties of vetiver oil.

Here are the ways I love to use vetiver essential oil:

1. Promote Feelings of Calm

Today, people are more stressed than ever. Vetiver essential oil is rich in sesquiterpenes, which contain grounding properties. When used on the skin or inhaled, it can help provide a calming and grounding effect on emotions.

To use: after a difficult day, apply to your neck and feet to promote feelings of calm.

2. Support Your Immune System

No one enjoys being sick, that’s why it’s important to make sure your immune system is working well and doing it’s job. Vetiver oil contains immune-supporting properties and is a great way to fortify your immune system.

To use: place a couple of drops Vetiver essential oil into a veggie capsule and take it internally.

3. As a Sleep Aid

Sleep is extremely important for the health of both the mind and body. When individuals do not receive adequate hours of sleep or have too many sleepless nights, body functions begin to slow down. Vetiver oil is a great essential oil for sleep and relaxation and can help give your body the sleep it needs.

To use: rub vetiver oil on the bottom of your feet to promote a restful night’s sleep.Benefits of Vetiver Essential Oil | LeannForst.com

4. Homework Helper

Vetiver oil is known to promote deep concentration. A study by Dr. Terry Friedman showed this oil was able to increase performance levels by 100%. The study also showed that vetiver, along with cedarwood, is very effective in improving focus and calming down children.

To use: diffuse 2 drops cedarwood and 3 drops vetiver at homework time or in the office.

5. Diminishes Scars and Marks on Skin

Research has shown that the components of vetiver can help regenerate skin tissue (source). This is great for people with scars, dark spots, or acne pox.

To use: add a few drops of vetiver to your face wash, body wash, or lotion.

Oils that Blend with Vetiver

Vetiver oil blends well with Lavender, doTERRA Serenity®, doTERRA Balance®, Sandalwood, and Lemongrass essential oils.

Bonus tip: Use a toothpick to help get the desired amount of essential oil out of the container if the Vetiver oil is too thick to get out of the bottle. Remember, a little bit goes a long way.
