Essential Oil Profile: Patchouli
Think you’re not cool enough to enjoy patchouli oil? Think again.
Extracted from the leaves of the patchouli plant, patchouli oil has many uses and benefits for both the mind and body. And the smell is lovely; diffuse alone or combine with woody aromas to enjoy the grounding benefits.
Here are the ways I use patchouli essential oil in my life:
1. Balance Emotions
Patchouli oil is rich with patchoulol, a highly grounding chemical component. Because of this constituent, and others like it, patchouli oil has a grounding and balancing effect on emotions. It also encourages the release of serotonin and dopamine, which eases feelings of anger and anxiety.
To use: apply one to two drops of Patchouli to your neck or temples or place three to four drops of Patchouli oil in the diffuser of your choice (check out the new Petal Diffuser).
You can also add 10 drops of patchouli to a warm bath after a long, stressful day.
2. Skin Care
Patchouli oil contains a variety of skin benefits and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, and skin imperfections. Patchouli oil can also promote a smooth and glowing complexion.
To use: apply it to dry areas to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes.
3. As Natural Deodorant
The sweet and musky scent of patchouli oil is often used in perfumes and colognes and can emit a natural musk when applied to the skin. When diluted, patchouli acts as a natural deodorant. The strong and unique scent makes a great base in floral blends.
To use: Create your own natural scent with this DIY Essential Cologne.
And for a sweet musk cologne, combine the following (and get them all here):

4. Oral Care
Patchouli oil works hand-in-hand with the minty flavor of the peppermint oil and aids in deodorizing and freshening the mouth.
To use: try this DIY Patchouli and Peppermint mouth rinse. Combining two powerful oils from the mint family, this rinse will give your mouth a rejuvenating cleanse that will leave your breath with a fresh, clean feeling.
5. Hair Care
Detangling wet hair can be time consuming and can even get a little painful. Using the dynamic combination of essential oils (below), this will cut down on the time spent with tangles and will decrease unnecessary stress on the scalp.
To use: make that tangled mess of hair a thing of the past with this DIY Natural Hair Detangler.
6. Bug Repellent
Patchouli oil works great to repel mosquitos, flies and other annoying bugs. You can use it outside while you are gardening or having fun in the backyard, or you can use it inside.
To use: add patchouli oil to your laundry detergent or diffuse 5 drops in your favorite diffuser.
