What is in the popcorn we eat?
Popcorn is supposed to be good for you, right? Well, not always.
Did you know that butter flavored microwave popcorn doesn’t get its flavor from real butter? The butter flavor comes from chemicals disguised as butter flavor.

Diacetyl is the butter flavor agent used in microwave popcorn that was banned by some manufacturers due to its effect on the respiratory function and link to Alzheimer’s disease. However, some manufacturer’s still use it.
Beside this, there are chemicals coating the bag to keep it from catching fire during the popping. These chemicals produce PFOAs (Perfluorooctinoic acid), which is a likely carcinogen.
A better way to do popcorn is the clean eating way. Try this yummy recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
- 1 tablespoon tamari
Directions:
- Heat oil in a deep, wide sauté pan.
- Add popcorn and cover.
- Hold pot with potholders and shake every few seconds until kernels have popped.
- Remove lid, add tamari and nutritional yeast, mix and transfer to serving bowl.
P.S.. Mix with some cinnamon or dark chocolate cacao morsels and you have a yummy treat for your next movie night
