The Ways I Use Frankincense Essential Oil

When anyone asks me what essential oil would be good for a specific ailment or condition, my response is often Frankincense.

There is a reason it’s nicknamed the “king of oils”. It’s one of the most versatile and powerful oils out there. Frankincense was highly esteemed by ancient civilizations and used for the most sacred of practices. Most notably, it was one of the gifts the wisemen gave to Jesus.

Frankincense oil is derived from the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree and trees of a similar species, which are native to Ethiopia, northern Somalia, south-western Oman, and southern Yemen. For centuries, the resin of the tree has been obtained by slashing or making an incision into the tree, which then emits large amounts of resin. After the resin secretes from the tree, it is then scraped off or collected as it drips onto the ground. When dōTERRA obtains the resin from trees, the trees are carefully scored or “bled.” From there, the resin is delicately distilled and essential oils are extracted.

The aroma of frankincense is a combination of pine, lemon and woody scents.

Components of Frankincense Essential Oil

The main components of frankincense are α-pinene, limonene, α-thujene. It also contains a complex mixture of monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene, Limonene, alpha-Thujene, and beta-Pinene. This intricate mixture of components works together to make an oil with many uses and benefits.

The unique chemical constituents contribute to frankincense essential oil’s renewing effects when applied topically and ability to support diverse cells in the body when taken internally. The monoterpenes also contribute to the aromatic benefits, including its ability to promote relaxation and a sense of focus.

Benefits of Frankincense Oil

Promotes Healthy Cellular Function

This natural supplement is known to help support healthy cellular function. One study found that cell reproduction decreased significantly in cells exposed to frankincense essential oil. This is especially beneficial in cancer when you want to stop cancer cells from multiplying.

To use: add one to two drops in a veggie capsule and take daily.

Supports a Healthy Immune System

That same study found “that frankincense essential oil supports a healthy immune response”. Other research found that it exhibits immunostimulant activity (source).

To use: diffuse a few drops in your favorite diffuser to keep everyone in your home healthy.

Helps Decrease Inflammation

According to Dr. Axe, frankincense “can be useful in helping prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue and has been shown to significantly reduce levels of dangerous and painful inflammation, making it a natural treatment option for pain-related conditions that affect the muscles, joints and tendons.”

To use: combine 5 drops frankincense, 2 drops lavender, and 2 drops peppermint in a roller bottle and fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil. Massage on affected area.

Eases Digestion

Frankincense is known to support your digestive system. It does this by increasing production of digestive enzymes, which is needed for proper digestive health.

To use: add one to two drops of oil to eight ounces of water or to a tablespoon of honey for digestive relief.

Relieves Stressful Feelings

The chemical components of Frankincense result in an extremely powerful aroma that can help to dispel negative feelings—like stress. If you are feeling like the pressures of life are weighing down your mood, apply to the bottom of your feet. The soothing sensation and aroma will promote feelings of relaxation and a balanced mood.

To use: massage diluted frankincense oil onto your hands or feet. You can also add a few drops to a diffuser.

Refreshes Skin

Whenever your skin is feeling or looking unmoisturized, add a couple drops of frankincense to your moisturizer to help hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. The scent, combined with your moisturizer, will add a warm, spicy, and clean scent to your skin.

To use: mix two to three drops of the oil with an unscented lotion and apply directly to skin.

Uplifts Your Mood

With its strong aromatic properties, frankincense oil is essential in giving a positive and focused lift to the rest of your day.

To use: add 1 drop of frankincense oil, 1 drop of sandalwood oil, and 2 drops of grapefruit oil to your diffuser for the perfect diffuser blend.

Oils that Blend Well with Frankincense

Frankincense oil blends well with citrus oils like lime, lemon, and wild orange. And it diffuses well with other oils such as cypress, lavender, geranium, rose, sandalwood, ylang ylang, and clary sage.
