Heather Tognazzini is the founder and co-owner of The Salt Retreat located in Frisco, TX.  With a background in fitness and marketing, her personal passion has always been health and wellness.

When a relocation to north Texas caused allergies for her and her family, she began a quest to find a natural remedy that worked.  Once she tried dry salt therapy, she was hooked and wanted to share her finding with others.

Heather and left her career in the private club industry and convinced her husband James to join her in bringing natural salt therapy to her community.  They opened The Salt Retreat together in May 2018 and are on a mission to educate others about the healthy benefits of dry salt therapy.

Frustrated with Fall Allergies?

Blame it on the ragweed – the single biggest fall allergy trigger lasting from late summer to mid-fall. Ragweed produces a fine pollen that can cause seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), which is estimated to affect as many as 23 million Americans.

Next up in the fall allergy trigger lineup is mold followed closely by dust mites. Going back to school often prompts fall allergies in children, since both mold and dust mites are commonly found in schools.

Nagging allergy symptoms include:

Sound familiar? Traditional medicine treats these allergy symptoms with a wide array of antihistamines, corticosteroids, and decongestants. Side effects may range from fatigue and drowsiness to confusion, irritability, headache or insomnia.

Some natural remedies include rinsing allergens from nasal passages with a neti pot, drinking herbal tea from nettle leaf (a natural antihistamine), and diffusing soothing essential oils such as peppermint, frankincense, or eucalyptus (see below).

A natural remedy gaining momentum is dry salt therapy (halotherapy). The origins of dry salt therapy go back to the 1800’s when a Polish doctor (Dr. Feliks Boczkowski) recognized that the salt miners enjoyed unusually good health and were relatively free of respiratory ailments. Widely used in eastern Europe and Russia, halotherapy has been used in the United States for less than a decade.

Today’s dry salt therapy involves relaxing in a treatment room while finely ground pharmaceutical grade salt is misted into the air via a machine called a halogenerator. The salt’s natural anti-inflammatory properties help open airways for better breathing while also loosening congestion. The tiny particles of salt penetrate deep into the respiratory system (well beyond just the nasal passages) and help cleanse the airways from pollutants and irritants.

There’s also an added bonus – dry salt therapy has many healing benefits for skin, relaxation and better rest – all of which make for a healthier, happier fall.

Want more natural remedies for allergies? Here is the blend recipes that I recommend:

Allergy Relief Essential Oil Blend

  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 6 drops Roman Chamomile
  • 2 drops Myrrh
  • 1 drop Peppermint

Diffuse or apply to sinuses and bottoms of feet.

Bonus Tip – simply apply 1 drop peppermint oil on the base of the neck two times per day.
