Can You Prevent and Treat Psoriasis Without Medication?

One of the most common misconceptions about psoriasis is that it’s a skin condition.

Psoriasis is actually an autoimmune condition that affects 7.5 million people in the U.S.

What is Psoriasis?

The main symptom of psoriasis is itchy patches of red, dry skin called plaques. They typically occur on the elbows, knees, back, face, feet, hands, and scalp. Sufferers may also experience discoloration of nails, lesions on the skin, and dandruff.

So what causes this unpleasant condition? Simply put, it occurs when your immune system is overactive and starts attacking healthy cells by mistake. But there are many other contributing factors, including:

  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Weather
  • Certain medication, like beta-blockers
  • Illnesses, such as a respiratory infection or cold
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Diet

Psoriasis is also associated with other serious health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and depression. So, it’s more than just some embarrassing patches of dry skin.

Traditional Treatments

When you go to your regular doctor and seek care for psoriasis, they will more than likely prescribe a topical ointment and/or biologic drugs that target parts of the immune system. But these are simply treatments that will manage symptoms and will not get to the root cause. Traditional medicine believes that psoriasis is genetic and cannot be cured.

Holistic Treatments

Holistic practitioners recognize that psoriasis is caused by autoimmunity, poor diet, as well as genetics. But there is also skin/gut connection. Remember that your skin is your largest organ and psoriasis is an indicator of your whole health. In order to reverse it, you need to look at whole body health.

Let’s break it down: your immune system is attacking something that it doesn’t recognize such as toxins, silent infections or a food intolerance such as gluten.  So your first step should be to test for infections, toxicity and food sensitivities.

Psoriasis Diet

Leaky gut refers to a condition where the lining of your intestines has been damaged by toxins (chemicals, viruses, parasites, bacteria, heavy metals, gluten, etc).  Since your gut is a tight wall of cells that keep anything from getting in, any damage makes your intestines permeable. This results in toxins getting into your bloodstream.

A toxin is any substance that causes harm to the body and “toxic load” is the accumulation of those toxins that burden the body’s systems and organs. Toxins can be inhaled in the air we breathe, ingested through the food we eat, or absorbed when something is applied to the skin. Excessive exposure to toxins can put the body in an inflammatory state, leaving the immune system suppressed and vulnerable to disease.

So what kind of foods should you eat and avoid to prevent leaky gut and autoimmune conditions?

Foods to Avoid:

Foods to Eat:

  • Foods high in probiotics – non-dairy yogurt, kefir, cultured vegetables
  • Wild-caught fish
  • Foods high in antioxidants – goji berries, wild blueberries, pecans, cilantro, and kidney beans
  • Foods high in zinc – grass-fed beef, lamb, pumpkin seeds, kefir and chickpeas
  • Turmeric
  • Foods high in fiber – fruits, vegetables, beans, and seeds

An easy way to eat anti-inflammatory foods is to switch to the Paleo diet. The idea of the Paleo diet is to cut processed foods from our diet and return to the way our early hunter-gatherer ancestors ate.
