The Health Benefits of Soda Doping
Nope, that is not a typo. Soda doping is real thing and athletes everywhere use it to boost energy. It has even been reported by the American College of Sports Medicine to improve performance.

First let’s start with what it is: soda doping is a mixture of sodium bicarbonate (the active ingredient in baking soda) and lemon. Many athletes, especially runners, take baking soda capsules before an event for extra energy and to decrease muscle fatigue.
How does soda doping affect your health and ability to fight off illness?
Our bodies are 70% water and it’s important to maintain your pH balance (think of a swimming pool). Too much or too little acid or alkaline is harmful. For example, one illness as a result of too much acid is Acidosis. Being diagnosed with acidosis can actually be life threatening.
The symptoms of acidosis are fatigue, confusion, shortness of breath, headache, and increased heart rate. The health issues it can lead to include:
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Autoimmune disease
- Gout
- Dementia
- Premature aging
Sodium bicarbonate/baking soda plays a role in acidosis in that it’s one of the treatments (as well as a detox) because it raises the pH of your blood.
Soda Doping and Cancer
It’s well known that cancer thrives in an acidic environment, so since sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline salt, it helps offset the acidity. In one study, sodium bicarbonate was found to “reduced the incidence of metastases in experimental models of breast and prostate cancer“.
In addition, soda doping (again, adding lemon to baking soda) is rich in vitamin C and is an anti-carcinogen. This combination includes limonoides, which are phytochemicals that have been found to strip off the protective layer that coats cancer cells. And due to the large amounts of vitamins C, soda doping also increases the body’s ability to clean itself while fighting diseases.
How to Soda Dope
From the Budwig Center for Natural Therapies:
At night time, put 1 glass of water into an empty liter/quart jar and then add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and the juice of one whole lemon. Be sure to clean the lemon peel well beforehand.
Now fill the jar with pure water and leave overnight. In the morning upon rising drink 3 glasses of this lemon/baking soda mixture.
