Learn What The Standard American Diet is and Why You May Need to Detox

Do you love eating things like french fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders or sugary sweets? Have you eaten fast food at least once this week? Do you have a soda with many or most of your meals?

These are just some of the unhealthy items that make up the Standard American Diet; SAD for short, but if you ask me, it’s also an accurate description.

How do you know if you’re following the Standard American Diet? Some of the characteristics of the SAD are:

  • High in processed meat
  • High in saturated fat
  • Low in fiber
  • High in processed foods
  • Low in plant-based foods
  • High in sugary desserts
  • High in refined grains
  • High in dairy
  • Low in seafood

Wikipedia describes the typical American diet as “…about 50% carbohydrate, 15% protein, and 35% fat, which is over the dietary guidelines for the amount of fat (below 30%), below the guidelines for carbohydrate (above 55%), and at the upper end of the guidelines for the amount of protein (below 15%) recommended in the diet.”

Sure it’s all delicious and perhaps satisfying…until you get a bit older and your doctor tells you that you’re at risk for things like cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic illness, and intestinal disorders.

Dr. Mark Hyman says that the problem with the SAD is that it’s “energy dense (too many calories) but nutrient poor (not enough vitamins and minerals).” He goes on to advise, “too many empty calories confuse the metabolism and pack on the pounds”.

This could explain the obesity rates in the U.S. And why the U.S. is ranked 26th in life expectancy out of 34 other countries

So what can you do to change your health and live a longer life? To start, stop following the Standard American Diet. Eating a diet that consists of real (not processed!) food is the only way to ensure your body’s health. And a detox can help you start to do that. My 10-Day Detox program will show you how to change your eating habits and teach you what foods are delicious, satisfying, and healthy. And I promise, I won’t starve you to death!
