Can Helichrysum Essential Oil Replace Other Medications?
Whenever possible, I try to find natural remedies for everyday ailments. Essential oils are Mother Nature’s first aid to treat issues like headaches, indigestion, allergies, congestion, rashes, insomnia, nausea, and much more!
Today I wanted to feature an essential oil that is used for so many conditions that it can replace most of over-the-counter medication you have in your home.
What is Helichrysum?
Originally found in Africa, Australasia and Eurasia, helichrysum is a type of plant . There are over 600 species of this plant with yellow flowers, and when you see it you’ll realize why it’s categorized in the sunflower family.
Known as the “everlasting flower”, helichrysum has been used since ancient greek times for its healing properties. We know today that helichrysum has many health benefits, including (and one that this over 40 momma needs!) skin health.
Health Benefits of Helichrysum Essential Oil
So what are the health benefits exactly? Well helichrysum has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it can be used to replace your anti-fungal and antibacterial agents.
Here are all of the uses for helichrysum:
- Prevents signs of aging
- Improves complexion
- Rejuvenates skin
- Promotes healthy metabolism
- Treats wounds and infections
- Improves digestion
- Supports the nervous system
- Lowers blood pressure
- Supports heart health
- Treats allergies, acne, skin inflammation, and muscle and joint pain
Helichyrsum’s protective properties are expressed partly like a corticoid-like steroid, helping to lower inflammation by inhibiting action in different pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism. Researchers from the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Naples in Italy also found that due to ethanolic compounds present in the extract of helichrysum flowers, it elicits antispasmodic actions inside of an inflamed digestive system, helping to reduce the gut from swelling, cramping and digestive pain. Helichrysum is predicted to become an important resource to treat common diseases.
As far as side effects from using helichrysum, like many natural remedies, side effects are rare. It’s always best to test on small area of the skin for a reaction before using.
