How Essential Oils Can Keep Your Family Healthy
For many moms, this time of the year means enjoying a pumpkin spice latte or taking the kids to watch the leaves change color or getting ready for the holiday season. However for others, like health coaches and doctors, it means cold and flu season.
Although that’s where the similarities end between health coaches and doctors; as a health coach, I look for ways to keep you healthy without prescription drugs.
I call it natural healing.
One of my secret weapons for this time of year are essential oils. I firmly believe – and I am NOT alone – that medicinal-grade essential oils are amazing natural remedies that help with a variety of different ailments. Most of all, they are a safe, alternative to often unnecessary medicine.
Here are just some of the natural healing properties of medicinal-grade essential oils:
- Eases cold and flu symptoms
- Promotes better sleep
- Soothes sore muscles
- Heals skin conditions
- Balances hormones
- Improves digestion
- Supports weight loss
- Boosts energy
- Improves mood
- And much more…so much in fact there is 415 page book on all the ways essential oils can support health.
Respiratory Illness
No one likes that feeling of coughing or having mucus in your lungs. But guess what? That expectorant that the doctor will prescribe will come with side effects. Sure, you may not experience all or any side effects, but why take the risk? Eucalyptus oil works as a natural expectorant. As a result, it helps thin and loosen the mucus in your lungs, so you can easily cough it out. Bonus: eucalyptus oil has purifying properties that are beneficial to the skin.
Eucalyptus oil can be taken aromatically and topically.
Stomach Issues
Nausea is one of those things that is difficult to deal with, especially as moms. It’s not like we can just stay in bed all day, we have to suck it up because we have so much to do! Peppermint oil has a soothing effect on the stomach lining and it also reduces your stomach’s muscle spasms. This is perfect for any stomach aches or nausea you may be experiencing.

Sleep Disorder
It’s quite simple: moms need sleep…for not only our health, but for our sanity. Of course there are extenuating circumstances, a sick kid or a late night catching up on work. But for the most part, a good night’s sleep will benefit everyone in the household. Studies have shown that lavender oil improves the quality of sleep and helps with insomnia.
I like to put lavender oil in a diffuser for a fabulous sleep aid. Bonus: lavender oil is also used to treat neurological illnesses, such as migraines, stress and anxiety.

Support Immune System
You know those aerosol air fresheners that claim to kill germs in your home? Have you ever looked at the other ingredients in them? I’m just not comfortable spraying that stuff all over my house. What I use to detox the air in my home from germs is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has been found to increase atmospheric oxygen and negative ions, which inhibit bacterial growth. It also stimulates your immune system, keeping you safe and healthy from germs outside of your home.

Another favorite of mine is doTERRA’s On Guard. It’s their own blend that supports a healthy immune system and respiratory function. As one of doTERRA’s best-selling oils, On Guard protects against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system
