A cough is your body’s way of handling an irritation in your throat. While an occasional cough is normal, a persistent cough can be frustrating and lead to serious illness.
Types of Coughs
Coughs can be either acute or chronic.
An acute cough is one that accompanies a cold or flu. There is nothing to worry about with an acute cough, it usually only lasts 2-3 weeks.
Chronic coughs are more serious. They last more than 3 weeks and are caused by:
- Bronchitis
- Asthma
- Allergies
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- Smoking
- Throat disorders (like croup)
Essential Oils for a Cough
These are the essential oils I recommend for a cough:
- Bergamot – it contains camphene, which is known to relieve congestion by reducing respiratory tract fluid (source).
- Cedarwood – exhibits antispasmodic abilities, which helps relieve a cough (source).
- Eucalyptus – enhances immune system because of its ability to eliminate bacteria (source).
- Frankincense – addresses lung and throat inflammation (source).
- Lavender – useful for respiratory symptoms, like alleviating phlegm trapped in lungs and sinuses
- Lemon – “has antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which not only makes it ideal for fighting viruses, but also for reducing cold and flu symptoms such as coughing…” (source)
- Lemongrass – helpful to help relax and feel comfortable while coping with cold/flu symptoms (source).
- Myrrh – improves symptoms of bronchitis, colds, or coughs (source).
- Peppermint – contains menthol, which people often use to relieve congestion
- Rosemary – calms the muscles in your trachea
- Sandalwood – a known expectorant that can also fight bacteria and viruses
- Tea Tree (Melaleuca) – inhibits the growth of bad bacteria that causes respiratory issues (source).
Diffuser Blend Recipes:
Pour water and the following blends into your favorite essential oil diffuser. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the aroma to fill the room.

Blend 1:
- 4 drops eucalyptus
- 2 drops peppermint
Blend 2:
- 3 drops bergamot
- 2 drops lavender
- 1 drop thyme
Massage Oil Blend Recipes:
Blend all ingredients and massage onto the throat, chest, and back of neck. Do not wash off, you want the oils to be absorbed into the skin. Do this once per day until the cough subsides.
Blend 3:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 6 drops lavender
- 6 drops eucalyptus
Blend 4:
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 5 drops eucalyptus
- 5 drops peppermint
- 2 drops thyme
Blend 5:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 5 drops bergamot
- 4 drops lavender
- 3 drops eucalyptus
Bath Oil Blend Recipe:
Blend ingredients together and add to bath water once filled and stir. Relax and soak for 20 minutes.
Blend 6:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 8 drops myrrh
- 4 drops eucalyptus
