How to Use Clove Essential Oil

Commonly used as a household spice, clove is also a unique and versatile oil that you can use outside of the kitchen.

Sourced from Madagascar, doTERRA Clove essential oil is harvested from unopened and dried flower buds of the evergreen tree, Eugenia caryophyllata.

Clove essential oil has many everyday and health uses, such as:

1. Supports Your Immune System

Clove essential oil contains powerful antioxidant properties (one gram has 30 times more than blueberries!). It helps stops free radicals to maintain a healthy immune system and guard against illness.

To use: diffuse in your favorite diffuser, especially during cold and flu season.

2. Supports Heart Health

Clove oil promotes healthy blood circulation. It’s been found that the eugenol in clove oil may be able to dilate major arteries in the body while also reducing systemic blood pressure. Eugenol also prevents platelets in the blood from clumping together. All this can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

To use: add 2-3 drops of clove in a veggie capsule and take internally for cardiovascular health.

3. Soothes Sore Muscles

Known for calming tense and sore muscles, clove oil brings a warming sensation to the skin. It’s sometimes used for massage therapy. Keep in mind that clove is known as a hot oil, and should always be diluted with fractionated coconut oil.

To use: to enjoy a calming, warm massage at home, combine clove essential oil with the doTERRA Hand and Body lotion.

4. Supports Healthy Cellular Function

Because of the high antioxidant content, clove oil can reverse the damage caused by free radicals. This includes keeping healthy cells healthy and stopping cancer cells.

To use: combine 1-2 drops of clove oil and fractionated coconut oil and rub it on your neck and chest for natural antioxidant protection.

5. In Cooking

Because of its warm, spicy characteristics, clove oil makes the perfect addition to your favorite recipes, especially during the colder months.

To use: this essential oil pumpkin pie recipe harnesses the delicious, spicy flavor of clove, ginger, and cinnamon essential oils to add a new twist to an old favorite.

6. For Oral Care

Clove oil can be especially useful for dental hygiene. For years, it has been used in candies, gum, and dental preparations due to its ability to cleanse the mouth and help freshen breath.

To use: dilute clove and apply it to the gums for a soothing effect. You can also add one drop to your toothpaste, which will promote clean teeth and fresh breath.

Oils that blend well with Clove oil

Similar to other spicy or woody essential oils, clove oil blends well with essential oils that have similar properties. Spicy essential oils like wild orange, frankincense, cassia, cedarwood, ginger, and cinnamon blend well with clove oil due to their warm aromatic characteristics. Clove oil also blends well with sweet, herbaceous essential oils like roman chamomile and fennel oil.
