Drank Too Much? Try One of These Natural Remedies

With all of the Holiday parties you’ll be invited to this season, there is a good chance that you will partake in some holiday cheer – also known as alcohol. wine, mixed drinks, egg nog. Oh my!

Now if the party is extra-special fun, you may overdo it; leaving you to wake up the next morning with a massive headache, promising that you’ll never do that again. And of course you will keep that promise, but in the meantime there are some great, natural hangover cures. Here are a few of my favorites:

Water

This one is easy. A hangover is a mix of too many toxins from alcohol, your blood sugar dipping, and dehydration. In fact, the best way to ward off a hangover is to drink water while you’re drinking alcohol. I recommend one glass of water in between every glass of wine, glass of beer or fun holiday drink. But if you don’t have the presence of mind to do this during your event, either drink lots of water when you get home or when you get up in the morning.

Bananas

Is that a banana in your pocket or are you just hungover? After a night of drinking, your body needs to replenish its potassium. Grab a banana first thing in the morning or whip up a banana smoothie.

Ginger

It’s no secret that I am a huge ginger fan. Ginger is great for treating nausea and there are a variety of ways you can take it – ginger chews, ginger tea, or even some ginger biscotti.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint is another excellent remedy for an upset stomach. Brew some peppermint tea and you’re sure to feel better soon.

Vitamin B

Alcohol is a diuretic which causes you to lose valuable vitamins and nutrients. Taking vitamin B, especially a vitamin B-complex, is great to replenish your system. Plus it gives you a boost of energy.

Probiotics

Probiotics can help balance out the gut flora. It’s important to remember that alcohol is sugar and it disrupts your gut flora balance.  Probiotics help bring it back to balance.  In fact, I heard that in Ireland many times the party will end with everyone taking their probiotics….and nobody knows how to party better than the Irish!

Magnesium

Have a headache? Before you grab medication, try magnesium. Even if you have not been drinking, research shows that people who experience migraines often have lower levels of magnesium.

Detox Bath

A nice soak in a hot tub with bath salts and essential oils is just what the doctor ordered after a night of drinking. Try this combination – epsom salt, baking soda, wasabi powder, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and rosemary oil.

Essential Oils

To address hangover symptoms, here are my recommendations:

  • Peppermint essential oil for energy. You can inhale, diffuse or take internally.  Peppermint is also great for that hangover headache.
  • Lemon essential oil can help detoxify the alcohol. Add 1-3 drops in your water…and drink lots!
