Can Something as Simple as a Seed Help Prevent & Fight Cancer?
I fully understand that when I suggest fighting something as serious as cancer with a seed from a spice, it may seem far-fetched. But natural remedies are an important tool to fight cancer because they are safe for most people (please consult with your health coach first, though!) and easy to incorporate into your health plan at home.
Remember, cancer starts as inflammation and a suppressed immune system…and anything that will combat those 2 things are powerful against cancer. We no longer need to rely on the same 3 conventional cancer treatment methods that have always been offered – chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. You CAN have more control over your health.
Let’s take a look at black cumin seeds and how they can help cancer patients.

Black Cumin Seed Properties
Just to be clear, black cumin seed is native to south and southwest Asia. It is not the same as the cumin sold as a spice in our supermarkets here in America.
Black cumin seeds consist of a few different chemical compounds. Thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone and thymo all provide great health benefits. If you’ve never heard of black cumin seeds to prevent or cure disease, it’s important to note that it has been used for such things in Asia, Africa and the Middle East for years.
Thymoquinone (TQ) – is considered the anti-cancer component of black cumin seeds. Researchers have been studying TQ since the 60’s as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, as well as a cancer fighter. This is due to the fact that TQ improves the body’s defense system. TQ also induces apoptosis (which is death of cells) and controls akt pathway (which plays a key role in multiple cellular processes).
Thymohyrdroquinone – the anti-inflammatory compound that has been successfully used to treat conditions like Alzheimer’s, glaucoma, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
Thymo – often used as a disinfectant, it’s known to kill tuberculosis bacteria.
Black Cumin Seed and Cancer
In a 2004 study, researchers in Lebanon found that black cumin seed oil played a powerful role in cancer prevention and also acts as a cancer treatment agent.
The seed increases the activity of immune cells that target cancer cells – the T-helper cells by 55% and the natural killer cells by 30%. The seed oil also activates tumor suppressor genes, blocks cancer angiogenesis (which is necessary to tumors to grow), and promotes apotosis.
Another study, performed in Croatia, concluded that black seed oil decreased tumor cells by 52% in mice.
Both these studies – as well as others – have found that the oil is more successful and safer than chemotherapy and radiation. Furthermore, a study in the Journal of Investigative Surgery, showed black seed reduces the side effects of radiation treatments via its antioxidant properties.
Black cumin seed can help in the following cancers:
- Lung
- Kidney
- Liver
- Prostate
- Breast
- Cervix
- Skin
- Brain
In addition, black cumin seeds has been discovered to be an effective antibiotic against superbugs. An article on black seed benefits by Dr. Axe states, “Out of 144 strains tested, most of which were resistant to a number of antibiotics, 97 were inhibited by the oil of black cumin”.
Using Black Cumin Seeds
Integrative cancer doctor Bradford Weeks, is a big proponent on using the seeds to treat cancer. And he suggests grinding the seeds, like you would coffee beans. Feel free to sprinkle them on food or add them to a smoothie.
