Which Essential Oils Will Reduce the Symptoms of a Fever?
What is a Fever?
Are you the type of person that as soon as that thermometer leaves your (or your child’s) mouth, you’re grabbing a bottle of acetaminophen or ibuprofen?
After reading this, you may want to consider trying essential oils for the next fever in your home.
A fever (body temperature above 100.4°F or 38°C) is actually a good thing. It’s your body’s response to a foreign invader and it’s a good sign that your body is doing it’s best to get rid of it. A foreign invader can be a virus, bacteria, fungi, or other toxin.
Now, there are circumstances when a fever is dangerous. If your child is under 6 weeks of age, they should be seen by a doctor immediately. If the child is 3 months or younger, you should call your doctor’s office. And anyone with a fever of 104°F (40°C), should seek medical attention since a fever that high can be serious.
Essential Oils for Fever
Fever reducing medication does not address the root cause, and is really just for comfort. Now I know when your child is suffering, you want to do anything to ease their discomfort.

It’s important to remember that when applying essential oils on the skin, you’ll need to use a carrier oil too. This is because essential oils (especially CPTG, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® ones) are too strong to use directly on the skin.
Here are the best carrier oils to use to accompany the above essential oils:
Fever Reducing Essential Oil Recipes
Here are the essential oil recipes I recommend. Simply mix ingredients well and massage into the chest, stomach, bottoms of your feet, and back of neck. Repeat 2-3 times per day.
Essential Oil Blend #1:
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 8 drops peppermint
- 7 drops frankincense
- 6 drops lemon
Essential Oil Blend #2:
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 7 drops lemon
- 7 drops eucalyptus
- 4 drops peppermint
- 2 drops basil
These two next recipes are mists for your body. Blend all ingredients together in an amber, glass spray bottle (found here on Amazon). Spray over body a few times per day. Each mist should last about two days.
Essential Oil Body Mist #1:
- 60ml distilled water
- 15 drops peppermint
- 5 drops lemon
- 5 drops basil
Essential Oil Body Mist #2:
- 60ml distilled water
- 10 drops eucalyptus
- 8 drops frankincence
- 7 drops peppermint
