Relieve Symptoms Naturally with These PMS Remedies

There is one thought that goes through every woman’s mind at least once a month, ‘why do men have it so easy?’

And I’m not talking about the fact that they can just run their fingers through their hair (if they have hair) and walk out the door. Or that their entire wardrobe can successfully exist with 8-10 pieces of clothing. Or that it is perfectly acceptable for them to only shave their face.

I am actually referring to the fact that their bodies do not shed parts of them once a month, causing them to bleed for 5-7 days.  That’s right, I am referring to our little monthly friend and all of the goodies she brings with her – the headaches, the breakouts, and of course, the cramps.

Did you know that there are more options when it comes to relieving cramps than just popping a pill? Join me as I take you through my list of natural PMS remedies:

Hydration

Getting water through your body will increase the blood flow and actually relax those muscles, reliving some of the pain. Drinking hot or cold water will help, as will eating foods that contain lots of water will help, such as lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers and watermelon (notice they’re all fruits and veggies).

Take a Hot Bath

I don’t know about you, but I don’t need an excuse to take a nice hot bath. The heat will open up your vessels and increase the flow of blood, which will make you feel so much better. Don’t have time for a bath? You can use a heating pad; they even sell handy disposable ones that stick to your skin.

Get Moving

We know you sometimes just want to curl up in a ball until the pain goes away, but it’s actually better for you to get up and move. Exercise won’t alleviate the pain exactly, but people who regularly exercise are actually less likely to suffer from chronic pain, including menstrual cramps. Plus those endorphins that get released during exercise will make you happy.

Drink Tea

Along the same lines of hydration, there are some teas that are a natural anti-inflammatory.  Green tea for instance, is a known pain fighting food.  Red raspberry leaf tea is recommended, not only for pregnant women to help with labor pains, but also for menstruating women to decrease heavy periods.

Eat Yogurt

You know how one of the lovely side effects of menstruation is a bloated stomach? Well yogurt – or taking a daily probiotic – is great for those days where you swear you’ve gained at least 25 pounds.  Those active cultures in yogurt create good “gut flora”, which allows for normal digestion.

The key is to use the few days of the month where you have your period and listen to your body. Sometimes it is the simplest solution that can help you feel the best.
