Steps to take now to ensure your daughter never gets breast cancer
When you think about your children, you often think – and worry – about their future.
You worry if they’ll make good choices, you plan for their college education, you feed them fruits and veggies to instill a healthy lifestyle. And you know that actions taken now can dramatically impact a child’s future, and that includes their health future.
Did you know that there are 80,000 chemicals used in our food and environment that are not tested for human health? I’m not telling you that to scare you; I’m using it to make a point that there are many factors that affect the health of our children and we need to educate ourselves.
When it comes to our daughters, one of the biggest worries is breast cancer. According to BreastCancer.org, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
Here are some things you can do now to protect your daughter from breast cancer:
Avoid Endocrine Disrupters
Endocrine disrupters are environmental toxins that mimic, block or disrupt estrogen in the body. Xenoestrogens are a sub-category of endocrine disrupters that are man-made synthetic chemicals that mimic estrogen. They are particularly dangerous to hormone-sensitive organs like breasts and the uterus.
Xenoestrogens are stored in our fat cells and found to be linked to cancers, obesity, infertility, early puberty, pregnancy issues, and diabetes. They are found in items like food, personal products, plastics and insecticides. Avoiding xenoestrogens is not as complicated as you may think, check out this list of xenoestrogen chemicals to look our for.
Avoid BPA
I’m sure by now you have noticed that many plastic and canned products are labeled “BPA Free”. But here’s the thing, being BPA free isn’t always the answer. The chemicals used to replace BPA are similar in structure, so it’s a good chance that they’ll have similar health effects. They’re also new to the party, so their long term health effects have yet to be determined. I always advise to err on the side of caution and stick to glass water bottles or stainless steel.
Exercise
Studies have found that women who exercise for just a few hours a week lowered their risk of breast cancer by 18%. By maintaining a reasonable weight for your body, you keep down your body fat. And when you have more body fat, your body stores more estrogen. Breast cancer has been successfully associated with prolonged exposure to high levels of estrogen.
