Does Your Holiday Wine Contain Sulfites?

When it comes to sitting down and enjoying a nice glass of wine, the last thing you want to think about is chemistry. But unfortunately, that savory glass you're about to indulge in may contain sulfites.

What are Sulfites?

Sulfites are a sulfur-based chemical compound that are used as a food preservative. According to Wikipedia, in wine sulfites are "commonly introduced to arrest fermentation at a desired time, and may also be added to wine as preservatives to prevent spoilage and oxidation at several stages of the winemaking."

Should you Avoid Sulfites?

Now there are many debates as to whether or not sulfites are actually harmful to you, but for people who have a sulfite allergy, there is no question. The risk is also very high for people with asthma. The sulfites can also cause respiratory problems, hives, nausea, and sometimes anaphylactic shock for those with a sensitivity or allergy. Not to mention nasty headaches.

Organic Wine

Now in order for something to be labeled organic, it has to be free of pesticides, insecticides and other harmful chemicals. Wine can be labeled organic, but you have to be careful. If it says something like "organically grown", this means that the grapes were organically grown, but the wine itself may contain sulfites. But have no fear, wines that are USDA Certified Organic do not contain any added sulfites.
