Is medication the only way to lower disease rates?
I recently read a quote in a New York Times article that caught my attention and helped me validate what I already knew:
MANY Americans assume that the chemicals in their shampoos, detergents and other consumer products have been thoroughly tested and proved to be safe…industrial chemicals do not have to be tested before they are put on the market.
If this is shocking to you, keep reading. You’ll be surprised to know that these chemicals may be negatively affecting your health.
Rise in Chronic Diseases
The truth of the matter is that many people are experiencing pain and diseases that didn’t exist in such high numbers just a few decades ago. Here are some number that may interest you:
Disease Rates:
- Allergies: 1 in 8
- Asthma: 1 in 12
- ADHD: 1 in 10
- Autism: 1 in 68
- Alzheimer’s: 1 in 10
- Mental Health disorders: 1 in 5
- Type 2 Diabetes: 1 in 10 (1 in 4 after the age of 65)
- Cancer: 1 in 2 (men), 1 in 3 (women)
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2012, about 117 million people suffered from one or more chronic diseases.
Why is this frustrating for a health coach? Because diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even cancer, are the most common AND MOST PREVENTABLE health issues.
Reasons for Chronic Disease
It all boils down to a compromised immune system. Think back to 9th grade biology class where you learned that your immune system is meant to protect your body from infection and disease. And 80% of your immune system lives in your gut.
And what can hurt your immune system? Toxins.
Toxins are poisons found in:
- Pesticides used on produce
- Chemicals in our processed food and water
- Environmental pollution
- Cigarette smoke
- Chemicals in personal, cleaning products, air fresheners, dry cleaning, etc.
The increased use of chemicals, pesticides and environmental pollutants have been found to suppress immune processes and cause diseases.
What Can You Do to Reduce Your Exposure to Toxins?
Well there are many things you can do to transition to a wholesome, cleaner way of living:
- Choose whole foods over processed
- Buy organic
- Invest in a water filtration system
- Avoid chemicals in your personal products
- Use natural household cleaners
- Reduce your indoor air toxicity
- Detox your body
