Have you or someone you love received a cancer diagnosis?
Three weeks after I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer. After four brain surgeries, the doctors were able to debulk the tumor. He also went through gamma knife and cyber knife radiation with the goal of keeping the remaining tumor from growing.
It was then that the doctors said something to us that changed how I viewed cancer:
“Good nutrition and clean living can really go a long way to boost your immunity and disintegrate the rest of that tumor.”
14 months later my husband’s tumor was gone.
Epigenetics
Did you know that only a small percentage of cancers are actually genetic? It’s true, it’s only about 5-10%. So what that tells us is that 90-95% of cancers can be controlled, reversed and prevented. This is called epigenetics, which shows us that most diseases are caused by lifestyle, diet, and environment.
No longer should we fall for the notion that cancer is simply “bad luck”. If we take control of our health, we can avoid and many times even reverse serious illness, including cancer.
Healthy Cells vs Cancer Cells
The difference between a healthy cell and a cancer cell is that a healthy cell thrives in an oxygenated environment, while a cancer cell thrives in a non-oxygenated environment.
If you’re thinking, well I breathe oxygen, so that’s enough. Yes, but there are toxins in our food, water and environment that disrupt the respiration of healthy cells and convert them into cancer cells.
After a Cancer Diagnosis
When I work with a client that has cancer, I create a comprehensive, tailored protocol for them. It always depends on the type of cancer they have, if there are any infections present, and if they have any food sensitivities or nutrient deficiencies.
I believe in finding the root cause or causes of the disease and we do that by testing. Test, don’t guess!
There are many different tests and it depends on the client as to which ones are appropriate. For example, one test can uncover if the client has a fungal, bacterial or parasitic infection (all which can disrupt the respiration of a healthy cell). Another test can reveal if a client has a heavy metal toxicity – which can also be a root cause of disease. And yet another can test for food sensitivities. This is an important test because when you eat food your body is sensitive to, it causes inflammation, which disrupts your immune system. Inflammation promotes the growth and spread of cancer.
Nutrition
The first thing after testing, I will recommend a nutrition plan. Some may require a Keto diet, some may benefit from a vegetarian diet, etc. There are many diets and there is no one-size-fits-all.
There are recommendations I give to almost every client:
- Eat clean, organic foods
- Avoid GMOs (It has been shown that they greatly contribute to our increasing disease rates)
- Eat fruits and vegetables that have not been treated with pesticides and herbicides
- Avoid all cow’s milk products (see my blog post here as to how it contributes to cancer)
- Completely eliminate sugar (sugar feeds cancer cells)
Supplements
A targeted supplement protocol can fill in nutritional gaps, as well as detox the body. And the recommendations I give to almost every client include:
- A whole food multivitamin and multimineral to fill in nutrient gaps
- A comprehensive plant and marine-based omega that includes omega 3, 6 and 9
- A comprehensive antioxidant blend to fight free radicals and oxidative stress
Essential Oils
Essential oils are plant-based medicine. They are small molecules that can penetrate the cell membrane to address the root cause of the illness.
Here are some proven cancer-fighting essential oils that could benefit an anti-cancer health program. In my health coaching practice, I create a custom essential oil protocol using these oils with a complete nutrition and detoxification plan:
