Using Wintergreen Essential Oil for Health
I love a good minty flavor and smell. Wintergreen is known as a flavor in gum or toothpaste, but it’s also a valuable essential oil with impressive health benefits.
Wintergreen oil is extracted from the leaves of a creeping shrub and contains a unique chemical component called methyl salicylate.
Because of the distinctive natural constituents of wintergreen oil, it’s treasured for its topical benefits and is commonly used in lotions, creams, and oral hygiene products. The soothing sensations of this oil also make it an ideal component for massages. Wintergreen essential oil has a prominent scent that is sweet, minty, and refreshing. As a result, this aroma can be both uplifting and stimulating to the senses.
Benefits of Wintergreen Essential Oil
Supports Healthy Breathing
The aroma of wintergreen is great for opening up nasal passages and allowing you to breathe more deeply.
To use: combine 1-2 drops wintergreen oil with fractionated coconut oil and rub over chest and upper back, like you would a store-bought vapor rub.
Soothes Achy Muscles and Joints
Many over-the-counter ointments and salves for acute joint and muscular discomfort contain methyl salicylate as the active (working) ingredient. Methyl salicylate can be soothing to fatigued or strained muscles and joints. Because Wintergreen oil contains rich chemical components such as methyl salicylate, it is an ideal oil for massages.
To use: dilute 15 drops of wintergreen oil in 10 ml of fractionated coconut oil and rub the pain away
Improves Digestion
Wintergreen oil can be used in small doses to increase stomach acid and juices that help improve digestion. It also has anti-nausea benefits and soothing effects on the gastric lining and colon. This is because of its ability to reduce muscle spasms, which make it a natural remedy for nausea (source).
To use: mix wintergreen and fractionated coconut oil and rub over your abdomen. DO NOT take Wintergreen internally.
Prevents Skin Blemishes
If you’ve ever looked into skin care to prevent or get rid of blemishes, you’ve heard of salicylic acid. It’s a common ingredient in popular skin care products. Most importantly, it’s a component in wintergreen oil.

Wintergreen oil can help to soothe the body, and its aroma will have a positive and uplifting affect on the mind.

Freshens Up The Air in Your Home
Bring the outdoors in with the strong, pleasant aroma of wintergreen. The scent is also great for masking the smell of offensive odors.
